BUCS Slalom

Firstly, congratulations to everyone who braved the mud and high water to compete in the BUCS Slalom event at HPP this weekend!  Well done to the winners; Nottingham Trent, Loughborough and St Andrews all picked up quite a few points.  The full results are online here: http://www.bucsslalom.org.uk/results.

Important to note: BRING WELLIES for NSR next week!  The field is almost impossible to drive on at the moment and heavy vans are likely to get stuck so be careful.  See you there!

Summer kayak guide job in North Cornwall

Hi,

I am contacting a few university canoe clubs to see if anyone is interested in summer work near Polzeath North Cornwall.
The job will be Guiding sit on top sea kayak sessions on short coastal journeys and also taster sessions. Also potentially working as a coasteering instructor.
There would be plenty of time to get in the water if the surf was pumping and it is a pretty cool area to spend a summer as Polzeath is only 5 mins down the road.
Person would nee BCU level 2 coach and 4 star sea award.
We could provide/help sort out accommodation and sort out a beach lifeguard award if the coasteering side of the job appealed.

I can be contacted on this email if anyone is interested and has a cv they can send me.

sam@cornishcoastadventures.com

Thanks very much.

Pots Boater-EXE 2010 Again!

Paddler: Hugh Woods, Photo: Iain Craigen

Thanks to everyone who came down and braved the sub-zero temperatures on Saturday for the second Pots Rodeo, organised by Exeter University Canoe Club. Unfortunately due to the weather we couldn’t run the Rodeo, but we did make up for it with the Boater-EXE! A wicked course with a super fast start ramp and a massive Yak gate hanging from the bridge led the competitors down the two weirs at Pots, with a massive buoy to go round and the touch-crocodile in the eddy.

£1000 worth of Yak kit was up for grabs thanks to Pete at Yak, along with gear from Big Dog and Squarerock. Check out the Pots Rodeo website for a full write-up coming soon, and see the results here.

Thanks to everyone that helped out on the day and the commited safety team.
Special mentions go to…
Ewart and the guys at AS Watersports, Pete Ford and Yak, Snakey from Big Dog, Sam Anderson and Dan Whitlum from Squarerock, Lindz at For Your Eyes People, Darren and Kate from Fluid Skills, Scopes and Finn at Kayakkulture.com, Mill on the Exe, and Chris at Fitness First.

SW Student Safety – afterthoughts

I think it’s safe to say that the first ever South West BCU Student Safety course was a resounding success!  Chris Eastabrook coached our small group over the weekend, helping us learn all sorts of useful stuff about how to run a good and safe club, how to effectively coach people, and how to lead people down rivers with different scenarios.  We even managed to fit in some rope practice, personal skills and a good chat about possibilities when taking the club abroad.  The weekend was packed full of a great variety of useful stuff, very tailored to what we felt we wanted to learn.

Will it be happening again next year?  Definitely!  So if you’re a south west uni and missed out this year, not to worry there’s always the next one.  Also if you fancy hiring Chris’ expertise and fun coaching style at any other time of the year, i’m sure he’ll be delighted to oblige: www.chriseastabrookcoaching.com/

Pots Rodeo 2010 Again!

The Pots Rodeo is back on the 27th November 2010!

What is the Pots Rodeo?

It’s a freestyle kayaking event on Flowerpots Weir in Exeter, Devon. This is the second Pots Rodeo, and it has been moved from it’s date in February for better chances of water and hopefully it’ll be a little warmer! This time we are adding a Boater-Exe event, which will consist of a race down the two weirs at Pots. Then on the Sunday you can head out to Dartmoor with your club!

And it’s all to raise money for charity. This year it’s DELTA… http://www.deafeducation.org.uk

Click here to check out last year’s video.

Bigger Lights, Bigger Sounds, Bigger Moves and a Bigger Party!

Pots Weir is conveniently positioned right next to a pub, and from the pub car park we will be lighting up the Exe with some massive flood lights, AS Watersport’s resident DJ will be set up right next to the river, and all that’s left is for you guys to throw some moves, and head to the afterparty!

Who can compete?

Anyone can compete no matter what your ability. As long as you’ve been on a wave before, and you reckon you can roll you’ll be fine. The only restriction is it’s over 18s only. If you’re not keen on entering then that’s fine… the best place to watch from is the pub car park, and then afterwards there’s the epic party!

How do I enter?
Just drop us an email at team@potsrodeo.co.uk for more info, or head to the website… www.potsrodeo.co.uk, and find us on Facebook for up to date info.

Thanks to our sponsors so far…

SW Student Safety Weekend

Here’s a message from Chris Eastabrook about the Student Safety Weekend in the South West, on the 20th/21st November. It’s particularly aimed at the SW Universities so Bath, Bristol, Plymouth, Southampton, Portsmouth, Falmouth, and any others… if you’re interested, email info@nspf.co.uk or Chris!

“Dear Students!

The Student Safety Initiative is coming to you! What is this I hear you cry. Well it’s a weekend of practical activities and coaching sessions designed to give you the skills and information you need to effectively and safety run your university canoe club. Ideal for those new to the committee, or looking for fresh ideas for your club. The weekends are tailored to your needs but here is a rough outline of the activities on offer. All the staff that deliver this course have been heavily involved with university canoe clubs and now work professional to give you a quality and relevant weekend.

Sat AM: Classroom based discussion looking at running a good safe canoe club, legal aspects, kit maintenance and good ideas. This is not a lecture but an interactive discussion.
Sat Afternoon: A practical afternoon session looking at running great taster session, rope work or maybe a rescue session.
Sat Evening: At a local bar we will discuss overseas trips, giving you hints, tips and inspiration for your canoe club trip and finishing with a slide show of our recent trips.
Sunday: will be a full practical day looking at how to run effective river trips in your club, we will split into ability of group so you can see the different styles needs for different abilities.

The cost of this fine weekend is £100 per person ( a bargain!), and should be funded by your union / university. If you need help with this funding please forward my contact details to your safety officer.

Any questions, please give me a shout.

Polzeath Surf Weekend 2010!

The 2010 Polzeath student surf kayaking weekend is back! This year, it is to be held on the weekend of 8th-10th October at the usual venue of Valley Campsite right in the middle of Polzeath. It’s a nice simple weekend of surf kayaking and sociable drinking, with entertainment from Robbie’s Roadshow Disco on the Saturday night.

Our usual turnout is usually students from mainly southern uni’s, and a few of us from the dirty north. The social element of the weekend is second to none, and is a great opportunity to meet like minded paddlers and catch up with old friends!

Check out the facebook page for more information!

Go on, you know you want to!
